The 2013 Ford Taurus will get 32 miles to the gallon thanks to a new engine and a smorgasbord of fuel economy technology. A turbocharged four-cylinder engine will be the standard engine in the Taurus for the first time since 1991.
Power will come from a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine from Ford’s Ecoboost family. The engine will make 240-hp, which is 23-hp less than the 3.5-liter V6 in the 2012 Ford Taurus but also gets 4-mpg more than last year’s base model.
The engine alone isn’t responsible for the Taurus’ impressive over-30 fuel economy rating. For 2013, Ford has added deceleration fuel shutoff, smart battery management, a low tension serpentine belt, electronic power steering, reduced friction lubricants, variable-displacement air-conditioning and self adjusting shutters in the grill that will close whenever the engine needs less air to help with aerodynamics. Some of these tweeks will be used in the Taurus SHO to get a 25-mpg highway rating.
