Porsche is the top overall brand in J.D. Power and Associates’ annual ranking of initial vehicle quality, reports CNNMoney.com. Infiniti came in second place, Lexus was third, Mercedes-Benz fourth and Toyota came in fifth to round out the top five.
J.D. Power’s ranking measures both mechanical and design problems in the first 90 days of ownership.
Ford’s Mercury was the top-ranked U.S. brand, coming in sixth overall.
GM had four brands scoring above average, which is a big improvement for the company, considering none of their brands reached that score last year. Cadillac, Chevrolet, Pontiac and Buick all scored above average.
Another Detroit big three didn’t fare as well though. All three Chrysler brands (Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep) scored well below average. Jeep had the lowest overall brand score.
In general, the quality of new cars improved across the industry this year, according to the report.
