2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Gets 8-Speed Automatic Transmission and 30-MPG

The 2015 Chevy Corvette will get an eight-speed automatic transmission to go with its seven-speed manual option. The C7 Corvette Stingray is only one year old, but Chevy is already making improvements that will make the car faster, easier to drive, and more efficient.

Chevrolet says that the new eight-speed automatic transmission will get 5% better economy than the outgoing six-speed. Official EPA gas mileage for the 2015 Corvette Stingray hasn’t been released, but if Chevy’s estimates hold true it should get 18-mpg city and 30-mpg highway.

On top of the 30+ MPG rating Chevrolet is expecting, the eight-speed automatic will give the car quicker full throttle upshifts than the Porsche 911 while still offering comfortable shifts for normal driving.

"Corvette Stingray’s new eight-speed automatic delivers the comfort and drivability of a true automatic transmission, as well as lightning-fast shifts and the manual control that enhance the performance-driving experience," Bill Goodrich, assistant chief engineer for eight-speed automatic transmissions, said. "It was designed to enhance the Stingray’s driving experience, with performance on par with dual-clutch designs, but without sacrificing refinement."

The new eight-speed transmission is also eight pounds lighter than the 2014 Corvette’s six-speed model. Performance figures aren’t available yet, but expect the new eight-speed Corvette to beat the six-speed automatic Z51’s 3.9-second 0-60 time.
