Camaro, Mustang, Challenger Are the Top Three Stolen Sporty Cars
If you’re going to steal a car, at the very least make sure you steal one that’s fun to drive for the short time you have left before prison. What better way to make sure your short time joyriding is fun than with over 400-horsepower. It looks like that’s how car thieves are thinking, anyway. The top three most stolen sporty cars are all high powered American muscle.
Topping the list of most stolen sporty cars is the Chevy Camaro. Numbers two and three are the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger. From January 1, 2009 to December 1, 2012, 1,509 Camaros were stolen, followed by 980 Mustangs and 782 Challengers. The amount of sporty cars stolen drops dramatically after the big three, the next most stolen car on the list, the Porsche Panamera, was stolen just 103 times and the tenth most stolen VW CC was stolen just 23 times. This list only includes cars from the 2010, 2011 and 2012 model years, but if it did include all years, chances are the long running Camaro and Mustang would be on top by an even higher margin.
Sporty cars were stolen most in the Los Angeles area, followed by the Atlanta area, South Florida, the New York City area, and the Detroit area.
