General Motors has announced it will recall 12,662 Cadillac CTS sedans over a possible faulty passenger airbag sensor. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said in a statement, "Under certain conditions, a software condition within the passenger-sensing system may disable the front passenger airbag when it should be enabled or enable it when it should be disabled. In a vehicle crash, if the front passenger airbag does not operate as designed, increased personal injury could occur."
GM has said it became aware of the problem between July 24 and September 23, when it was testing a batch of its own cars. Out of the test fleet, four test fleet vehicles were reported to have the supplemental inflatable restraint readiness light illuminated and the passenger airbag status "off" light illuminated while the front passenger seat was occupied. With the system unable to detect the difference between having a passenger and not, it could create a dangerous situation.
The recall is scheduled to begin November 18 with Cadillac dealers will reprograming the passenger-sensing system module for free.
