Volkswagen has some bold ambitions. The company has shied away from motorsports lately outside of a few small concentrated efforts. As far as any global championship is concerned, VW is absent from the field. But Volkswagen knows racing is important and that it improves the breed.
So in an effort to develop its more sporting models, the company has entered three 300-hp Sciroccos in the famed Nurburgring 24-Hour race. The entry is a follow-up to their class-winning effort last year with the then brand-new GTI.
The team assembled for the task is also impressive. Two-time Le Mans winner Hans Stuck will co-pilot one car, while the other team will share driving duties with rally legend Carlos Sainz! That’s an impressive rostrum indeed.
The racing Sciroccos will be fitted with the same 300-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter TFSI four-cylinder engine that powered last year’s class-winning Golf GTI. Both cars share similar underpinnings, so a lot of last year’s data should transfer right over. Whether or not they can mirror last year’s results remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure, Volkswagen is committed to testing their sporty models to the limit. That’s a commitment that can only benefit its consumers.
