The BMW 7-Series has a long history of being one of the most comfortable and luxurious cars you can buy. Whether it’s in a rap song or the parking lot of a country club, the BMW 7-Series is instantly recognizable as a top of the line car. The flipside to that instantly recognizable statement of wealth built over 40 years has always necessarily been the price. Purchase prices are obviously high on the 7-Series (how else would you know it’s better than any other car?), repair costs are through the roof and gas mileage has always fallen into the “if you have to ask you can’t afford it” category. Now that last price will be a little easier to stomach for those customers who can just about afford the 7-Series.
The 2014 BMW 7-Series will be available with a diesel engine for the first time in the United States. The diesel 740 Ld will be powered by a 3.0-liter inline six engine with 255-horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque. That horsepower rating won’t make any headlines, but with over 400 lb-ft of torque the diesel 7-Series should have no trouble keeping up with traffic. In fact with a 0-60 time of 6.0 seconds, the 740 Ld will beat a lot of cars off the line.
BMW hasn’t released official fuel economy figures, but said that the 2014 740 LD diesel will get 25% better fuel economy than the gas model. According to Autoblog, that could mean highway gas mileage of up to 37-mpg and city mileage of 25-mpg. The 2014 BMW 740 Ld will start at $82,500.
