Ford Mustang to Get Turbocharged Four-Cylinder Engine Option

The 2015 Ford Mustang will get a turbocharged four-cylinder engine as an option. The turbo engine will be a 2.3-liter EcoBoost one and is expected to have around 300-horsepower, which is the same as the base V6. Road & Track says that the 2.3-liter Ecoboost won’t replace the 3.7-liter V6 as the base engine, but should be an extra cost option(or maybe a headline grabbing no-cost option while they discount the V6 like the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid).  If the Ecoboost doesn’t beat the V6 in power, and if it is an extra cost upgrade, expect the EcoBoost model to weigh substantially less than the Mustang V6’s 3,400-lb curb weight and come with some suspension upgrades to justify the extra cost.

The 2015 EcoBoost Mustang will be the first turbocharged four cylinder Mustang since the 1986 Mustang SVO. The Mustang SVO also used a 2.3-liter four-cylinder with a turbocharger, but made just 200-hp in its most potent form. The 1986 Mustang SVO also weighed only 3,028-lbs. If Ford could match that in the 2015 model, they might have a competitor for the 2,758-lb Scion FR-S, especially if they keep to the 300-hp projection.
