High End Ram 1500 Laramie to Get V6 Option
For a long time, V6 engines in full-sized trucks have been relegated to work trucks. The weak, loud, cheap and not terribly fuel efficient V6s of the past had no business in heated leather seat luxury pickups that can cost two times as much as the base models. Now that Ram’s V6 Pentastar engine is on the market for the Ram 1500 with as much power as V8s from the past and 25-miles per gallon, the V6 is no longer the black sheep of the family.
The Ram 1500 V6 has 305-horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque, more horsepower than both the 5.2 and 5.9-liter V8 engines available up until 2001 in the Ram 1500. In fact, the Pentastar V6 is even stronger than the 8.0-liter V10 found in the Ram 2500 of the same era. On top of that, the Ram 1500’s V6 gets 17-mpg city and 25-mpg highway, numbers that were inconceivable in a full sized pickup not too long ago.
The Ram 1500 Laramie will be available with the fuel sipping V6 engine this month on 2014 models. The 2014 Ram 1500 Laramie V6 will start at $38,775. While that’s a lot of money, it’s also a $1,000 savings compared to the V8 Laramie.
What do you think? Is a V6 engine a good option for the Laramie since it’s fuel economy is probably more useful to luxury truck buyers than the extra towing capacity of a V8?
