Hyundai Motor America Inc. is recalling more than 150,000 Hyundai Elantra sedans built between the 2001-02 model years to correct two airbag-related defects. Apparently the reason for the defect is that there is a possibility that liquids that spill from a center console cupholder can cause frontal-impact and side-impact airbags to malfunction.
The recall is a bit complicated because it involves two different fixes. For 2001 models built before April 27, 2001, dealers will install a protective cover over an airbag module connector under the console to prevent contamination by spilled liquids. Cars built between April 27 and Dec. 18, 2001 will have to have their underseat wiring altered to prevent objects on the vehicle floor from messing with the normal function of side-impact airbags.
This could be a serious safety problem if left unfixed. If you own one of these cars, it’s in your best interest to head on over to your local Hyundai dealer and have this fixed right away!
