Total Performance’s PIT VIPER Shows Just How Good a Classic Mustang Can Get
Remember the Gone in 60 Seconds movie with Nicolas Cage? Do you remember "Eleanor", the 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500 which becomes the star of the film once it comes into the picuture? Well, that awesome ride was made by a company called Total Performance Products, and it has a new pony in the corral.
Called the Pit Viper, this monster is based on an original 1968 Mustang Fastback. No cloned or refabricated sheet metal here. This baby is the way it was when it rolled out of its Detroit assembly line more than 30 years ago. Total Performance then ups the specs considerably.
Let’s start under the hood. This particular hood has two massive scoops in it, but these are not just for show. The hood openings are there to feed the 4-barrel carborator that sits atop a 580-horsepower, 427 cubic inch, 540-lb-ft big block V8. The engine is then mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Modernizing the older Mustang’s suspension is Total Performance’s specialty.
Coil-over schocks and modern independent rear suspesion makes a 60’s classic handle like a modern sports car. A 14” Baer big-brake system is covered by custom 20” rims and low-profile tires. Overall the look is mean, clean and classy. The front bumper might be a bit too much for purists, but thankfully that can easily be changed. In fact, it all can be custom tailored to your needs and want. Then again, it should be with a price tag of up to $200,000!
Total Performance Products has truly created a unique performance car. Just remeber to get a good alarm system! A car that looks this good can attract unwanted attention, and could literally be "gone in 60 seconds".
