German automaker Volkswagen-Porsche has taken the top seat by becoming the world’s largest car manufacturer. Volkswagen-Porsche passed up Toyota to take the top spot and has produced 4.4 million vehicles so far this year, the U.K. Guardian reports.
Toyota has reportedly only produced 4 million vehicles so far this year.
The German automaker has benefitted from government stimulus car buying programs globally, according to the U.K. Guardian.
Volkswagen took over Porsche earlier this year when Porsche failed in an attempt to take over VW.
IHS Global Insight said Volkswagen becoming the world’s largest automaker was helped by Toyota’s decision to cut its production in half during the first quarter of 2009.
Before Toyota became the world’s largest automaker, General Motors held the title for 80 years.
