Would You Drive a 3-Cylinder Car? The 1.0-Liter 2014 Ford Fiesta Will Give You the Chance

The 2014 Ford Fiesta will come with the option of a 1.0-liter Ecoboost turbocharged three-cylinder engine. Expected to get more than 40-mpg, the three-cylinder engine will only be available in the Fiesta.

The 2014 Fiesta Ecoboost’s 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine is expected to make 123-horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque, three more horsepower and 36 more lb-ft of torque than the standard four-cylinder engine. The 2014 Fiesta’s Ecoboost will use a variable speed oil pump, offset crankshaft and a primary cam belt that runs through an oil bath to make the engine smooth, efficient and quiet. Ford claims that the high-tech 1.0-liter has the highest horsepower per liter of all of the company’s engines, according to Autoweek.

While there haven’t been many three-cylinder cars in the U.S. (the last one besdies the Smart was the 1994 Geo Metro, which was also the last TBI engine sold on a new car in the United States, for you trivia nuts out there), Ford is betting that buyers will be willing to overlook the loss of a cylinder since the engine makes more power as its four-pot brethren.
