It’s sad to say, but most people don’t even know where Bulgaria is. The small European country has seen some huge advancements in infrastructure in the past few years and now they want to invite the pinnacle of motorsports, Formula 1, to race there.
The race would take place on a new permanent circuit that’s based on an existing motocross venue. The venue is located in the Dolna Mitropolya region of the country. Situated near the northern town of Pleven, the site is already being developed to host a round of the MotoGP motorcycle race series in 2011, so it is only natural that the government also wants to take this opportunity to stage a Grand Prix.
Staging these events is important for the emerging nation. Rumen Petkov, the Balkan nation’s minister of the interior, enforced this notion by saying,"The talks with MotoGP and Formula One are one of the main priorities for our country."
Bogdan Nikolov, president of the Bulgarian Motorcycling Federation, prepared a detailed proposal for submission to the FIA and the Formula One group December 15.
"It will be very difficult, but I think we will succeed," Nikolov said.
Hopefully they will succeed. Both the sports of Formula 1 and MotoGP could use a shot of new excitement in the arm. Adding interesting new venues like Bulgaria not only expands the sport, but also expands the fan base, which is what makes or breaks a top tier racing series.
