Nissan to Lay Off More Than 1,600 Workers in Spain

It has come to light that yet another manufacturer is being forced to lay off some of its workers. Nissan’s Spain division announced they will be laying off about 1,680 workers from its factories. This ultimately will cut production from three shifts a day to two shifts.

Fumiaki Matsumoto, vice president, Nissan Spanish Industrial Operations said in a statement, "This has been a difficult decision for the company, but it is a necessary action to ensure the plant’s future sustainability in 2010 and the years to come."

The Spanish factory builds the comapany’s Pathfinder and Armada SUVs as well as the Cabstar and Atleon light trucks for the European market. The company cites a lack of demand for these models as the main culprit for the decision to cut the shifts. SUV sales have all but halted, even in the European nations. If trends continue, Nissan fears there could be even more cuts.
