Volkswagen Considers Bringing the Next Polo to the U.S.

Volkswagen is considering expanding its lineup here in the states to include the small Polo hatchback. The Polo slots below the Golf and Jetta models and is slightly smaller and shorter. In Europe, where the car has been sold for years, it has been a consistent seller for VW. Now with the ever changing global economy, people are being forced to seriously consider a smaller car for transportation.

American and Japanese companies are already readying a large offensive on the small car market, so Volkswagen needs to prepare itself for the battle. When, or if, it does come to the U.S., expect the Polo to be equipped with two different engines: a 1.4-liter turbo four-cylinder with 125-hp; and a range-topping 1.4-liter turbo and supercharged four-cylinder with 170-hp. In a car that will weigh anywhere from 2,300 to 2,500 pounds, the latter version would be a perfect engine for a Polo GTI.

Either way, it would be foolish of VW to not bring the Polo. It is a car with a great track record for Volkswagen and should prove to slot quite nicely in the current North American VW lineup. Let’s hope they bring it.
